The Burnet High School softball team beat Georgetown Gateway 3-2 March 14 in the District 24-4A opener for both teams.
Head coach Hailey Wooten couldn’t emphasize enough the significance of the win.
“It was big because Gateway ended our season (in 2022),” she said. “Ever since then (my players) have been waiting for this. This is a chance for us to show this was a mistake last year. It was a big one.”
Maddie Moise led the Lady Dawgs with a solo home run, a 2-RBI hit and “a ball she put in play” where Burnet scored on an error.
“She accounted for all three runs,” Wooten said.
Meanwhile, Burnet sophomore pitcher Presely Crawford struck out 13 in seven innings in a pitching duel with Gateway’s Chloe Ellis, who struck out 10.
The Lady Dawg ended the game with a statement: two strikeouts and a line-drive to right field for the final out.
“Presely’s confident, she has that demeanor,” Wooten said. “We were at the top of the seventh, and I told her ‘all we need are three outs. Give it everything you got.’ She said ‘OK.’ I think the team feels confident behind her.”
The coach said her players and staff knew the importance of this contest and all arrived to Bulldog Diamonds ready to contribute.
“(Usually) you go up a couple of runs and you can breathe,” she said. “In that game, there was no breathing. They know how big it was.”
Burnet ended the week with a 7-4 win against Salado March 15.
The Lady Dawgs welcome Lago Vista Tuesday, March 21, to Bulldog Diamonds with the junior varsity at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m.
